Overview of Trip
My best pal Allen and I wanted to do an extended motorcycle riding trip in the summer of 2009. Allen rides a sweet looking Suzuki Bandit 650 and I ride a customized Yamaha R6.
Our schedules really made July the only time we could make a trip work. A trip over to Vancouver Island or up to Hyder, Alaska were our preferred options. We decided that Vancouver Island worked out a little better for us this time.
We wanted to keep the trip as manly as possible and decided to camp whenever we could. I think it added another level to the trip. It was no longer two guys riding during the day and staying in a hotel at night. Now we were hardcore bikers sleeping besides our bikes :)
Our route took us from Kamloops through Little Fort, riding west to 70 Mile House and down to Clinton. We took Highway 99 past Lillooet to the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal, where we caught a ferry to Gibsons (where Beach Combers was filmed). We went to Powell River to see Allen's parents and crash for the night. We caught a ferry to Vancouver Island and ended up in Ucluelet and Tofino where we did some camping, sight seeing, and surfing. We bombed down to Qualicum Beach for the night and rode onwards to Nanaimo to catch a ferry back to British Columbia's mainland. We rode on Highways 10 and 7 to Hope, and then hooked up with the number 3 to Osooyoos. We rode to Kelowna, where we took the Westside road to Vernon and then on to our homesin Lumby and Kamloops. We rode as many Destination Highways routes as possible. There's a link at the top of the page for Destination Highways. The organization ranks highways for motorcyclists.
Seven days of riding and seven days of fun. We named it J.A.M.B. 2009. Short for Joel and Allen's Motor Bike Trip 2009. Don't ask about the missing T... We're really not that bright. J.A.M.B. is pronounced JAM-Buh. It's a more exotic sound, no?
I decided to document the trip and share some stories, thoughts and pictures (anything for web content, hey?). Hopefully the following pages will inspire someone to plan their own motorcycle trip.
I know I'll be going someplace cool in 2010. Across Canada, perhaps?
Cheers,
Joel Brown
